The Spark: What Drew Me to Technology?
A.E. As a woman in the technology industry, I’ve often found myself navigating a landscape that was not always designed with me in mind. However, my passion for problem-solving and innovation has driven me to pursue a career in this dynamic field, despite the challenges. My journey into technology began with a deep curiosity about how things work. I was always fascinated by the idea of creating and designing applications from scratch. The tech industry’s constant evolution and its potential to solve real-world problems further fuelled my desire to be part of this world. I wanted to be where innovation happens!
M.S. My path into the technology industry wasn’t a straightforward one. Initially, I was drawn to tech not by a deep-rooted passion but by the vast opportunities the field offers. Over time, as I delved deeper into programming and problem-solving, I developed a genuine love for technology. It’s a field where you can constantly learn, innovate, and directly impact the world around you.
Essential Skills: What Has Been Crucial to My Career?
A.E. As I’ve progressed in my career, I’ve come to realize that mastering certain technical skills is essential. For me, learning programming languages was essential and important to develop my projects. But beyond just coding, understanding the business and user needs, has been crucial for developing efficient solutions. However, the key to staying relevant in this rapidly changing industry has been my ability to continuously learn and adapt. Whether through online courses, attending workshops, I’ve made it a priority to stay on top of my skills. Moreover, the skills such as problem solving, teamwork, and communication empowered me to handle complex challenges and collaborate effectively with others.
M.S. Throughout my career, mastering core technical skills like coding in languages has been essential. But what’s been even more critical is the ability to adapt and learn new technologies as the industry evolves. I’ve kept up with these changes by attending conferences, participating in online courses, and engaging with professional communities. These efforts have not only helped me stay current but have also opened up new opportunities for growth.
Shattering Stereotypes: My Experience with Assumptions in Tech
A. E. Despite the progress we’ve made, I’ve encountered my fair share of stereotypes as a woman in tech. There have been times when my technical abilities were underestimated, or I was presumed to be more suited to non-technical roles. These biases can be frustrating and discouraging, but they’ve also motivated me to prove my capabilities. To counter these stereotypes, I’ve focused on consistently demonstrating my expertise by taking initiatives in challenging projects. By doing so, I’ve not only built a strong professional reputation but also contributed to changing perceptions about women in technical roles.
M.S. Unfortunately, like many women in tech, I’ve encountered stereotypes that can be discouraging. The assumption that women are less technically capable or more suited for roles like project management rather than coding is still prevalent. To counter this, I’ve focused on consistently delivering high-quality work and taking on leadership roles in technical projects. I’ve actively supported other women in the field, motivating them to overcome these barriers.
Pathways to Success: My Advice for Women Entering Tech
A.E. For women starting their journey in tech, my advice is to build a solid foundation in technical skills and never stop learning because that industry is continuously evolving. Connecting with other professionals, finding mentors, and joining tech communities can provide invaluable support and opportunities. By staying focused on your goals, standing up for yourself, and learning from each experience, you can successfully overcome these challenges and break through the barriers of stereotypes.
M.S. For those new to the tech industry, my advice is simple: stay curious, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo. Building a strong network is crucial—mentorship and sponsorship programs can be invaluable in navigating your career and accessing leadership opportunities. And most importantly, remember that resilience is key. The road may be tough, but with determination, you can overcome the challenges and carve out your own successful path.
Building a Better Future: What I Believe Companies Should Do
A. E. I believe companies need to create inclusive environments that support diversity. This includes implementing fair hiring practices. Mentorship and sponsorship programs can be incredibly valuable in guiding women through their careers and opening doors to leadership opportunities.
It’s also important for companies to celebrate the achievements of women in tech, by promoting and recognizing the contributions of women, organizations can inspire others and create role models that future generations can look up to.
M.S. Looking ahead, I’m hopeful that as more women join the tech industry and as companies commit to fostering inclusive environments, we’ll see even greater progress. By working together, we can create a tech industry that is more diverse, equitable, and innovative.
